Building lists
Detachments and enhancements
A detachment gives a list its rules. Enhancements and the Warlord belong to single units. This chapter shows where you choose what.
Detachments
Where the game system knows detachments, in Warhammer 40k, you choose them when you create the list. How many there may be is up to the edition:
- With a budget (11th Edition): each detachment costs Detachment Points, and the list has a budget for them. Above the list stands how much of it is spent. A detachment that exceeds the rest can no longer be ticked; below it stands how much is left.
- Without a budget: the list has exactly one detachment. It is chosen when the list is created and stays fixed.
The Force Disposition
In the 11th Edition the catalogue asks for a Force Disposition with the detachments. It stands beside the list of detachments; offered is what the chosen detachments allow. If only one is left, it stands as text instead of a choice.
Change detachments later
In the 11th Edition you change detachments and Force Disposition after creating the list as well, in the list settings. They show the same tick list with the budget as the create dialog.
- The detachments with their cost; what exceeds the budget is locked.
- “Save” keeps the new choice.
Enhancements
An enhancement is carried by a single unit. You choose it in the unit detail of its bearer, in the section Enhancement. Offered is what the chosen detachment allows this unit; each option names its price, and its rules text stands below. Where the catalogue offers the unit none, the section says so.
In the list, the enhancement stands in square brackets after the name of its bearer.
- The bearer's enhancement, with price and rules text.
- The configuration, further down in it the “Warlord” box.
The Warlord
Where the catalogue asks for a Warlord, it offers it as an option of the characters: a Warlord box under Wargear / options in the unit detail. In the list and in the head of the unit detail, the Warlord carries a star after its name.
If the Warlord is missing or there are too many, the list check says so, and likewise when the chosen detachments cost more than the budget allows.
