Getting started
First start and catalogues
On its first start Armamentarium brings no game data yet. You choose which catalogues are downloaded, and from then on the application works with what lies on your device.
Where the data comes from
Units, characteristics and points come from BSData, a community project that keeps this data for many game systems. Armamentarium reads those files; it ships no rules content of its own.
Only what you pick is downloaded, and only once you confirm it. After that the catalogues lie on your device, and you go on building your lists without a connection. The application never downloads a newer version by itself: whether one exists you see after a check in the data sources.
Choosing catalogues
With not a single catalogue on the device, Armamentarium opens the screen Choose catalogues. The game systems stand on the left; an arrow unfolds a system's editions. You can tick several systems and several editions.
- The ticked edition. The plaque “Carries the start” shows which edition the application opens with.
- “Download and start” downloads the selection and then opens the application.
- “Cancel and close” downloads nothing and closes the application.
On the right the application sums up how many catalogues you picked and roughly how large the download is. Some editions carry a note: Incomplete for older editions whose data is less complete, Read-only for fixed lists such as Combat Patrol, No points for Kill Team.
Downloading, and what can go wrong
After Download and start the application fetches the catalogues one after the other and shows which one is under way. If you cancel now, whatever has finished downloading stays, and the application closes.
If the download fails, the screen stays and so does your selection:
- If no catalogue arrived, check the connection and choose Retry download.
- If some arrived, start with what is there, or retry the download for the rest.
The introduction
Once the catalogues are in, the main view opens, and the introduction appears above it once: a few cards on the areas, on building a list, on configuring and looking things up, and on the showcase.
- The card and its subject; above it stands which card it is.
- “Skip” closes the introduction at once.
- “Next” turns the page; on the last card the button says “Done”.
The last card also carries the button Open manual. It opens this manual in the browser; the introduction stays open.
However you leave it, with Done, Skip, the cross or the Escape key, it does not come back by itself. You find it again under Options › About › Show the introduction again.
More catalogues later
You can fetch further catalogues at any time under Options › Data sources. In the Catalogues block you download, update or remove editions there. An edition can be chosen as soon as its catalogue lies on the device.
Whether a newer revision exists you see there after Check catalogues for updates; the application does not ask by itself. More under New catalogue revisions. You cannot remove the catalogue of the edition that is open; when you remove another one, your lists stay.
