Device sync

The device sync keeps your army lists, your showcase and your settings in step across your devices. You need no account, the data is end-to-end encrypted, and it runs only when you tap Sync now.

What the sync is

Your devices share one sync key. Each device encrypts its data with it before the data goes to the sync server. The server sees encrypted data only. Nothing runs in the background: every sync starts with your click.

  • What travels: army lists, the showcase with its own paints and paint schemes, the showcase photos and the settings, such as language and appearance.
  • What never travels: window size and area widths, the chosen game system and edition, the unlock and the catalogues.
  • A list without its catalogue: a list of an edition whose catalogue is not on this device is stored when it arrives. It shows once you choose that edition and load its catalogue.

The unlock opens the device sync. Without it the section shows one sentence and the button To the unlock.

The options in the Sync section in the free version: the sentence “Device sync is open with the unlock only.” and the button “To the unlock”.
  1. Without the unlock the sync is not open.
  2. “To the unlock” leads to the purchase.

How to unlock is under Unlocking.

Setting up

  1. Open the options and choose Sync.
  2. Choose Create a new key. This switches the sync on and agrees that the application goes online for it.
  3. The layer Sync key shows the key as text and as a QR code.
  4. Close the layer. The first sync then starts by itself.
The options in the Sync section without a key: the buttons “Create a new key” and “Enter a key”.
  1. Creates a new key for your first device.
  2. Couples this device with a key you already have.
The layer “Sync key”: at the top the warning, below it the QR code and the key as text, below that the button “Copy”.
  1. The warning: whoever has the key has access.
  2. The key as text.
  3. “Copy” puts it on the clipboard.

If you copy the key, clear the clipboard as soon as you have pasted it on the other device.

Coupling another device

  1. On a coupled device: Options › Sync › Show key.
  2. On the new device: Options › Sync › Enter a key.
  3. Type the key or paste it with Paste.
  4. Choose Couple. The first sync then starts.
The layer “Enter a key”: at the top the warning, below it the field for the key with the button “Paste”, at the bottom the button “Couple”.
  1. The field for the key.
  2. “Paste” takes it from the clipboard.
  3. “Couple” connects this device.

The key's last character is a check character. A typo therefore shows at once, not only at the server.

If the new device already holds lists or showcase entries of its own, the application asks Data on this device:

  • Merge: your data stays, the data of the other devices is added.
  • Replace: your data on this device is deleted, only the data of the other devices stays. A second question names what is deleted. Nothing is deleted before all data of the other devices has arrived.

Syncing

Sync now stands under Options › Sync and at the bottom of area A. Below it you see when the last sync was.

Area A of the main view: below the army lists the button “Sync now” and the line “Last synced”.
  1. “Sync now” in area A, with the time of the last sync.

In the options you choose what this device syncs: army lists, showcase, showcase photos and settings. The photos travel only with the showcase.

The options in the Sync section on a coupled device: four ticks for army lists, showcase, showcase photos and settings, the line “Last synced: 5 min ago”, the buttons “Sync now”, “Show key” and “Resolve conflicts”.
  1. Sync army lists.
  2. Showcase photos, only together with the showcase.
  3. When the last sync was.
  4. Starts a sync.
  5. Shows the key for another device.
  6. Opens the open conflicts.
  • Settings: when language or appearance arrive from another device, they apply at once.
  • Notes after a sync: afterwards the application names objects from a newer app version, unreadable objects, objects too large for the sync and photos missing on the server.
  • A damaged list: a read-only list whose data could not be read is never uploaded and never deleted by a replace.

If a sync fails, an error code with SYN stands below it. What it means is under Troubleshooting › Device sync.

Conflicts

When two devices change the same object differently, a conflict arises. The layer Sync conflicts opens by itself after a sync. Later you reach it through Resolve conflicts.

The layer “Sync conflicts” with two objects: an army list “changed on both devices” and a showcase entry “deleted on the other device”, each with the buttons “This device”, “Other device” and “Keep both”.
  1. Per object: what happened and which version should hold.
  • This device: this device's version holds.
  • Other device: the other device's version holds.
  • Keep both: both versions stay, as two objects. The settings do not offer this choice.

Your choice goes to the server at once. Without a network the application remembers it, and the next sync sends it.

Keeping the key

  • Access: whoever has the key has access to your sync data. Do not pass it on.
  • Loss: without the key and without a coupled device the sync data is lost. The data on your devices stays.
  • Showing it again: every coupled device shows the key under Show key.

Ending and deleting

The options in the Sync section on a coupled device, at the bottom the buttons “End sync” and “Delete sync data”.
  1. “End sync” applies to this device only.
  2. “Delete sync data” deletes the data on the server, for every device.
  • End sync: this device forgets the key. Your data stays here and on the server. To couple again you need the key from another device.
  • Delete sync data: the sync data is deleted on the server, photos included, for every coupled device. The data on the devices stays. This works without the unlock too, as long as a key lies on the device.

When the server no longer finds the sync data, the application asks Sync data not found: The sync data no longer exists on the server – another device deleted it, or it lay unused for twelve months. End sync on this device? Your data here stays.

What the sync server stores and for how long is in the privacy statement. When the application goes online otherwise is under When the application goes online.
